No, no, I love Box of Rain, I love it so much it's embarrassing. I kind of feel like we pick and pick at a lot of the songs, but the Really Big Ones, we can't go there, we get embarrassed and have to look away, if that makes sense.

Or maybe there have been a lot of threads on Box of Rain that were before my time here.

just because it's obvious doesn't make it not worth mentioning. i frequently forget about the power of that song.

Oh, you are DEAD wrong newbie (har)...you might get demoted talking like this...

Huge discussions yrs past, I am sure (or were they off site? No...couldn't have been). Many have talked about it being THE only song played at a memorial service (I've been to two, sadly, such events).

Box has gotten a lot of attn here, I am sure. And certainly elsewhere.

Well, that was my second hypothesis: that everyone was just sick of the topic.

Yeah, and the lack of "live" versions probably contributes, eh? Dunno.

Didn't mean to come on too strong there, and I may be recalling off site discussions with Forumites in part. We all agreed that the version by RHunter is very nice for memorial services as it is more somber and the words come thru more clearly (the ablum is almost "upbeat" which is fine, but you get the idea...).

I'll have to go look up some of the old discussions. I was just pleased when Rob listed it as one of his favorite songs; in the few months I've been hanging around here, I haven't seen it come up much. I didn't know if that was because the topic was worn out or if everyone's love of Box of Rain is just so obvious there's no need for discussion. I mean even non-deadheads love Box of Rain.

Thanks ... maybe we need a new Box of Rain thread soon. I had to put in American Beauty in the car this morning.

I've never understood why Phil sounds so different on the studio version. If he is able to sing like that, why did he never do it later? It's like one afternoon he was able to sing ... maybe it was just a dream we dreamed ... Don't get me wrong, I like the rough-voiced BOR's also, though I have to admit, the first time I heard one (never heard one live), I thought, "What the hell."

Well, recall that his harmonizing is pretty fair to good, even great on Attics and other 1970 studio efforts...and then MarsHotel has a couple solo tunes. I'd say with practice and studio help, he had a decent voice, though limited, and best in harmonies...I have always love his 65 EMRain, and OTisNow.

An acquired taste I guess, but once you've acquired it, you're not gonna shake it.
